Pacita Abad (Basco, Filippine, 1946 – Singapore, 2004) è stata un’artista filippina.

 

Biografia

 

Pacita Abad è nata a Basco, Batanes, una piccola isola nella parte più settentrionale delle Filippine, tra Luzon e Taiwan. La sua carriera di pittrice è iniziata più di 30 anni fa, quando si è recata negli Stati Uniti per intraprendere gli studi universitari. Ha esposto il suo lavoro in più di 200 musei, gallerie e altri luoghi, tra cui 75 mostre personali, in tutto il mondo. Parte delle opere di Abad è in collezioni d’arte pubbliche, corporate e private in oltre 70 paesi.

Abad ha conseguito una laurea in scienze politiche presso l’Università delle Filippine nel 1967. Nel 1970, si recò negli Stati Uniti con l’intenzione di studiare legge, ma cambiò idea e conseguì la laurea (MA) in Asian History at Lone Mountain College (University of San Francisco) nel 1972. Mentre in California, sposò uno studente dello Stanford MBA, Jack Garrity, che divenne un economista internazionale dello sviluppo. Abad ha studiato pittura alla Scuola Corcoran of Art di Washington, DC e alla Art Students League di New York City. Viveva in 5 continenti diversi e ha lavorato in più di 80 paesi, tra cui Guatemala, Messico, India, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, Mali, Papua Nuova Guinea, Cambogia e Indonesia.

I suoi primi dipinti sono stati principalmente figurativi opere socio-politiche delle persone e delle maschere primitive. Un’altra serie erano i dipinti di grandi dimensioni di scene subacquee, fiori tropicali e fauna selvatica. Il più esteso corpo di lavoro di Pacita, tuttavia, sono le sue vivaci e variopinte opere astratte – molte tele di grandi dimensioni e anche una serie di piccoli collages – su una serie di materiali dalla tela alla carta di tessuto di corteccia, al metallo, alla ceramica e al vetro. Abad ha creato più di 4.000 opere d’arte. Ha dipinto una lunga 55 metri Alkaff Ponte a Singapore e la coprì con 2.350 cerchi multicolori.

Abad ha sviluppato una tecnica di pittura trapunto (dal nome della tecnica di quilting), che ha comportato la cucitura e imbottitura delle sue tele dipinte per dare loro un tridimensionale effetto scultoreo. Poi cominciò a incorporare nella superficie dei suoi quadri materiali come stoffa tradizionale, specchi, perline, conchiglie, tasti di plastica e altri oggetti.
