I have read the controversies regarding the opening of the Russian Pavilion, and as a free artist and thinker, I write the following. The Venice Biennale is, by statute, an independent and autonomous entity. It cannot be subject to prohibitions or interference regarding the free choices made by the Commissioners of the international Pavilions appointed and approved by the Presidency of the Art Biennale. The President, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, did not just do well, but exceptionally well to open the doors to Russia-even if it is a country at war, just as the USA, Israel, Ukraine, Iran, and several African countries are at war today. Should these countries be banned as well?

Wars are ignoble and ruthless actions, but that is merely geopolitics and has nothing to do with culture. Culture is peace; art is poetry; painting is the breath of God (Pope Ratzinger). For those who observe and contemplate them, the arts offer the viewer and the world a sense of peace and inner goodness. As a contemporary painter, I also use my art to advocate for the respect of Nature and provide economic support for the biodiversity of natural reserves (such as Vendicari). I have always explained that Art is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also of ethics, because it serves to improve the conscience and sensitivity of all of us human beings.

For this reason, all Pavilions must remain open during the Venice Biennale. Above all, Russia and the wonderful Russian culture must be open; they have been marginalized for too long, and it is now time for forgiveness and pacification.
