ART COLOGNE 2011 – Highlights of modern and contemporary art
Art lovers and collectors will find a broad range of modern and contemporary art in all price brackets and covering all movements. The most exciting highlights this year include works from artists who will also be shown in some of the nearby museums of the region, such as Joel Shapiro, Thomas Struth, Arnulf Rainer, Heinz Mack, Lucie Stahl, Otto Dix, Tony Cragg. Among others Karsten Greve (Cologne/ St. Moritz/ Paris) has high-calibre bronze by the New Yorker artist Joel Shapiro (Untitled, 2010) who is currently shown at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Karsten Greve and Hauser + Wirth (London/New York/Zürich) will also present works by the recently deceased artist Louise Bourgeois. Annely Juda Fine Art (London) will bring blue chip staples including Anthony Caro and David Hockney. One of the highlights at Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich) will be a C-print by Thomas Struth (Grazing Incidence Spectrometer, 2010), one of the most important representatives of contemporary German photography, whose current exhibition at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Dusseldorf) is a full success. Bernd Klüser (Munich), whose personal drawing collection is currently shown at the Von der Heyd Museum in Wuppertal, excels with a Lenin portrait by Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol will also be shown by Hans Mayer (Dusseldorf), Salis & Vertes (Zurich/ Salzburg), and Heinz Holtmann (Cologne). Florian Sundheimer (Munich), among others, will be showing an early work by Georg Baselitz (Der Orientale,1959) whereas Fred Jahn offers a recent work from 2010 (1. Mai, 6.IV.2010). Further galleries bringing Baselitz to Cologne are: Michael Werner, Fred Jahn, DEWEER gallery, Bo Bjerggaard, Haas, and Springer & Winckler. Johnen (Berlin) has work by important names like Stephan Balkenhol, Wilhelm Sasnal and Thomas Ruff and will also be showing the sculpture Egg Bucket on stool with pedestal (24 x 38 x 35 inches) by Düsseldorf-based Hans-Peter Feldmann (2003). The special feature on Panamarenko in the fair’s entrance hall will also be reflected in the fair, hence Kewenig (Cologne/ Palma de Mallorca) offers museum-quality works of the Belgium artist such as “Japanese Flying Pak 3” (2001). Lelong (Paris/Zurich) will bring works by Jannis Kounellis, who will also be on view in the Galerie Kewenig (Cologne) during the course of the fair.
Johann König (Berlin) offers C-prints by Annettte Kelm, who won the ART COLOGNE price for NEW POSITIONS in 2005 and will be shown in the Bonner Kunstverein this year. The special sectors OPEN SPACE and NEW CONTEMPORARIES will spotlight cutting-edge trends in contemporary art. Hence, Jack Hanley (New York) is planning a powerful show of furniture works by Austrian Erwin Wurm (OPEN SPACE); Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman (Innsbruck) will also be offering works from Erwin Wurm. Daniel Buchholz (Cologne/ Berlin) is putting on a show with R.H. Quaytman—in his gallery as well as bringing her works to the fair—together with other artist such as Isa Gensken (Hommage à Jasper Johns, 2009). The NEW CONTEMPORARIES sector is the place for young emerging galleries and its studio-fresh art and experimental work by young artists. Galerie Jocelyn Wolff (Paris) presents new works by the performance duo Prinz Gholam – Notman-Boxer 2008. Ancient Modern (London) presents works by Alan Kane and Des Hughes, Foxy Production (New York) is showing the hot American artist Sterling Ruby who takes his subject matter from a wide range of sources, including marginalized societies, maximum security prisons, modernist architecture, artifacts and antiquities, graffiti etc. sterling Ruby will also be shown by Sprüth Magers (Berlin/ London). In addition to Foxy Production, twelve other participants from the United States will present their wares at the ART COLOGNE, including Broadway 1602 (New York), Andrew Kreps (New York), 1301PE (Los Angeles), Team (New York), amongst others.
The scope and quality of exhibits in the section for Classical Modern are remarkable. Swiss dealers Henze & Ketterer are offering museum-quality masterpieces by Brücke artists. Among the highlights are oils by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Totentanz der Mary Wigman, 1926) and Erich Heckel (Boot im Schlick, 1907). Düsseldorf’s Remmert und Barth will also bring works on paper by Kirchner. Gallery Ludorf (Düsseldorf), Salis & Vertes (Salzburg/Zurich), Koch (Hannover) and Utermann (Dortmund) are bringing works by Emil Nolde.

45th ART COLOGNE to feature top galleries
Returning galleries and newcomers from Germany and abroad predominate – NEW CONTEMPORARIES and NEW POSITIONS will once again be major players in the international art market in 2011
When a small group of German gallery owners organized the first Cologne art fair in 1967, they aimed to establish a new art centre – at least temporarily. Their long-term goal was to promote the creation of art in Germany – in other words, young German artists – and to position them in the international art world so as to attract a new group of collectors. As we now know, they achieved all of these goals to an extent they could hardly have imagined back then. When the 45th ART COLOGNE is held from 13th to 17th April 2011, approximately 190 galleries from 24 countries will be using the international art market in Cologne to present a wealth of modern and contemporary art. On hand will be numerous galleries that have exhibited in previous years, as well as major new exhibitors from Germany and abroad, such as Andrew Kreps (New York), TEAM Gallery (New York) and Tomio Koyama (Tokyo). The returning galleries will include Galerie Lelong (Paris/Zurich), Buchmann (Berlin/Lugano), Guido W. Baudach (Berlin), Kewenig (Cologne/Palma de Mallorca), Bernd Klüser (Munich), Produzentengalerie (Hamburg), DEWEER Art Gallery (Otegem), Catherine Bastide (Brussels), Leo Koenig (New York), Fons Welters (Amsterdam) and Hauser & Wirth (London/New York/Zurich). Together with Christian Nagel (Cologne/Berlin/Antwerp) and Sprüth Magers (Berlin/London), they will be exhibiting in the main area of ART COLOGNE and also participating in OPEN SPACE.
Located once again in Hall 11 of Koelnmesse, the approximately 190 international galleries at ART COLOGNE will display works in the categories classical modernism, post-1945 art and contemporary art. In addition to major returning galleries and new exhibitors, ART COLOGNE 2011 will be characterized by exhibitors who have returned to the fair with great success in previous years. They include Annely Juda Fine Art (London), Karsten Greve (Cologne/St. Moritz/Paris), Akira Ikeda (Berlin/New York/Tokyo), Hans Mayer (Düsseldorf), Lahumière (Paris), Nächst St. Stephan (Vienna), Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich), EIGEN+ART (Berlin/Leipzig), Johnen (Berlin), Michael Werner (Berlin/Cologne/New York), Gisela Capitain (Cologne) and Daniel Buchholz (Berlin/Cologne). The important “young” galleries that will be exhibiting in the NEW CONTEMPORARIES and OPEN SPACE areas will include Ancient + Modern (London), Isabella Bortolozzi (Berlin), Foxy Production (New York), Ben Kaufmann (Berlin), Raster (Warsaw), Sommer + Kohl (Berlin), Standard (Oslo), Martin van Zomeren (Amsterdam) and Jocelyn Wolff (Paris).
The promotion of young artists and young galleries has been an important objective of ART COLOGNE for years now. For more than three decades, Koelnmesse’s close cooperation with the Federal Association of German Galleries (BVDG) has enabled extraordinary young artists from Germany and abroad to present their works in solo shows to an international public. The successful participants of this promotional program include artists who now have an international following, such as Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse, Thomas Demand, Elger Esser, Stephan Balkenhol, Günther Förg, Rosemarie Trockel, Andreas Slominski, Mischa Kuball, Gregor Schneider and Neo Rauch, as well as international superstars such as Erwin Wurm, Olafur Eliasson, Tracy Emin, Beat Streuli and Yinka Shonibare. In the NEW POSITIONS area at ART COLOGNE, 25-square-metre sponsorship booths for talented young artists will be located directly next to the stands of the gallery owners who are promoting them. In addition, one of these young artists will be honoured with the AUDI Art Award for NEW POSITIONS. The winner will receive a solo exhibition in the artothek in Cologne and the publication of a catalogue, which will be worth a total of 10,000.
For over a decade, ART COLOGNE has also supported young galleries by inviting committed gallery owners to present their respective programmes of future-oriented art trends on 30 square metres in the NEW CONTEMPORARIES area. The galleries will receive additional attention thanks to the MAURICE LACROIX ART AWARD for New Contemporaries, which was first presented in 2010. The winner of this award receives financing for his or her participation in the following year’s art fair.
