Il prossimo 14 febbraio Christie’s offrirà all’asta lo straordinario Ritratto di Henrietta Moraes di Francis Bacon (Evening auction – Post-War & Contemporary Art, London) che è rimasto nella stessa collezione privata per oltre trent’anni e che compare all’asta per la prima volta (stima su richiesta).
Francis Outred, Christie’s Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art, Europe, ha commentato: “Searing with raw colour and texture, Portrait of Henrietta Moraes is one of the most seductive and sexually charged paintings I have ever encountered by Francis Bacon. The carefully constructed mood through colour is forcefully invaded by the extraordinary swipes of the loaded brush, which create the woman’s voluptuous figure. This juxtaposition of the sheer beauty of colour with the brutal physicality of paint is what makes Bacon’s art so remarkable. Executed in 1963, this painting was undertaken in a landmark year, which saw the artist perfect his technique. It followed a period of intense experimentation in which Bacon investigated the properties of paint and the architecture of the human form. This turning point is widely acknowledged; 3 out of the 7 large-scale paintings created in 1963 now form parts of major international museum collections including The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Humlebæk, National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and the Tate Gallery, London. In the same year, Bacon also created a small-scale triptych Three Studies for Portrait of Henrietta Moraes (1963) currently held in the Museum of Modern Art. In a similar manner to the MoMA painting, Portrait of Henrietta Moraes is built up from a ground of papal red, which acts as a silhouette both in image and metaphor. The work has only had two owners since the day it was made, one of which was the important collector and post-War industrialist Willy Schniewind and the other being the present owner, a distinguished New Yorker who acquired the work in 1983. Portrait of Henrietta Moraes has not been seen in the public eye for fifteen years and I am very excited to be presenting this important piece of British art in London‟.
“Portrait of Henrietta Moraes” fu dipinto da Bacon alla fine del 1963, l’anno seguente alla retrospettiva – che ha segnato una svolta nella sua carriera – alla Tate Gallery di Londra e lo stesso anno della sua prima mostra importante in America, al Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum a New York. Per molto tempo il dipinto ha fatto parte della Collezione Schniewind. Il proprietario attuale lo acquistò nel 1983.
In catalogo anche eccezionali lavori di Lucian Freud, tra cui il disegno recentemente riscoperto “Boat, Connemara” (1948), “Small Figure” (1983) e “Annie (circa 1960)” uno dei primi dipinti di uno dei figli dell’artista. Opere di Gerhard Richter, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Louise Bourgeois e Nicolas de Staël.

La Evening Sale di “Contemporary Art”, che si terrà da Sotheby’s il prossimo 15 febbraio a Londra, include capolavori di Gerhard Richter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alighiero Boetti e Alberto Burri, oltre a Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley e Leon Kossoff. Il totale di questo appuntamento serale con l’arte contemporanea è di oltre 35,8 milioni GBP.
A commento dell’asta Cheyenne Westphal – Presidente di Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Europa: “With the outstanding total of $1.17 billion achieved for Sotheby’s global sales of Contemporary Art in 2011, Sotheby’s leads the market in this field. Attesting to last year’s successes, the Evening Auction we have been able to assemble this winter will be led by numerous desirable and fresh-to-market artworks by internationally collected blue-chip artists such as Gerhard Richter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud, among others, and the sale carries a pre-sale low estimate of £35 million which is in-line with the various-owners Contemporary Art Evening Auctions we staged in February and June last year.”
Si segnalano, tra le opere italiane, “Nero Plastica” di Alberto Burri, un poetico esempio d’uso del fuoco come strumento artistico. (Sempre un lavoro di Burri, Combustione Legno, è stato venduto da Sotheby’s a Londraa ottobre 2011 per il prezzo record di 3.177.250 GBP). Nero Plastica non è mai apparso in asta, è datato 1965 e fa parte del primo corpus di lavori dedicati alla plastica di cui è esempio eccellente. L’opera è stimata 800.000-1.200.000 GBP.
Degna di nota una “Mappa” di Alighiero Boetti (st. 700.000-900.000 GBP). L’opera fu acquistata direttamente dall’artista e oggi appare per la prima volta in asta. E’ stata disegnata nel 1983 a Trastevere, Roma e inviata a Kabul in Afghanistan per essere ricamata. Il testo attorno alla mappa rappresenta la viva protesta dell’artista contro l’occupazione sovietica che gli impediva di ritornare nell’amata Kabul.
Una delle opere più importanti in catalogo è “Orange Sports Figure” di Jean-Michel Basquiat2, un capolavoro dell’artista, una rarità da trovare all’asta. E’ stimato 3-4 milioni di sterline e fu dipinto nel 1982.
Tra gli altri highlights, “Abstraktes Bild (“Rot”)” di Gerhard Richter, fu eseguito nel 1991, in un periodo in cui l’artista iniziò ad usare il colore rosso per alcune tele monumentali. E’ stimato 2.5-3.5 milioni di sterline.
