engraving, 1514, without watermark, a very fine, rich Meder IIa impression, printing very darkly in the shadows, on a large sheet with wide margins, with inky plate edges in places, with a horizontal central crease, mostly visible in the margins and verso, some pale scattered foxing in the margins, in excellent condition

31/01/2013 – La vendita “Albrecht Dürer: Masterpieces from a Private Collection” ha realizzato $6,002,750 (£3,781,733/€4,442,035) con un venduto del 76% per lotto. Il top lot è stato “The Rhinoceros”, che è stato aggiudicato per  $866,500 (£545,895/€641,210), realizzando un nuovo record mondiale per l’artista

Inizia con questa vendita l’Old Master Week di Christie’s: “Capolavori di  Albrecht Dürer da una collezione privata”. In calendario per il 29 gennaio per un’apertura in pompa magna dell’annuale appuntamento newyorkese dedicato ai Dipinti antichi. 

In catalogo 62 lotti. Questa collezione privata è una delle più importanti raccolte di stampe mai apparsa prima in asta. Presenti stampe incisioni e xilografie che raffigurano soggetti sia sacri che profani. La stima si aggira sui 4.6 milioni di dollari.

Tra i lotti più importanti “Melencolia I” (stima: $400,000-600,000), un’incisione del 1514. Il soggetto probabilmente è un’allegoria delle malinconia, ma la sua iconografia non usuale ha aperto diverse discussioni tra gli storici dell’arte.  Nel sedicesimo secolo il temperamento malinconico era associato al genio e alla ricerca della conoscenza.

Top Lot  “Sant’Eustachio” del 1501 circa presentato con una stima a richiesta.

engraving, circa 1501, watermark High Crown (M. 20), a superb, early Meder b impression, very rich and black, yet printing with astonishing clarity, with burr in the trees and elsewhere, with thread margins on three sides, trimmed on or just within the platemark below but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the subject, laid down along the edges onto an 18th century album sheet, a small surface abrasion on the muzzle of the second dog from the right, generally in very good, original condition
