L’asta Phillips di “20th Century and Contemporary Art” a Londra ha totalizzato £24,590,500 ($35,164,415 / €31,475,840). Al primo posto Piero Manzoni con un Achrome del 1958 venduto a £5,570,500.
Ma a brillare è stato Mimmo Rotella che, con l’ultima battuta a 900.000 £, ha realizzato il nuovo record d’asta. “Untitled” del 1964 era stimato 400-600.000 £.
Piero Mascitti, il direttore della Fondazione Mimmo Rotella, che ieri sera si trovava in sala a Berkeley Square, ha collaborato attivamente con la casa d’aste indicando importanti collezionisti americani, sapendo del loro forte interesse per un Rotella dedicato al cinema. I rumors dicono che tra questi collezionisti vi fossero Steve Cohen e Leonard Lauder, che recemente dovrebbe aver acquistato una Marilyn di Rotella. Per ora l’unica cosa certa è che il quadro volerà in America…

Questo décollage di grandi dimensioni, 203.5 x 223 cm, è uno dei pochi esempi in cui l’artista, scomparso nel 2006, si cimenta con la grande scala cinematografica. Tutti i personaggi delle locandine dei film che si assiepano in questa grande opera, sembrano impegnati in una conversazione improvvisata: Rock Hudson con Kurt Douglas, Charlton Heston con Sofia Loren, il tutto mentre Dean Martin e Frank Sinatra si godono una sparatoria di uno dei loro film western…

Il precedente top price per l’artista era di 509.600 £, aggiudicati per “Con un sorriso” del 1962 nel 2003 da Sotheby’s a Londra. Era stimato tra 30 e 40 mila sterline.
Jean-Paul Engelen (Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art) e Hugues Joffre (Worldwide Head of 20th Century Art) hanno dichiarato: “Siamo molto soddisfatti per i prezzi archiviati per Jean Dubuffet e per il record mondiale per Mimmo Rotella. I risultati sono superiori a quelli dell’asta dell’anno scorso”
