Ronnie Pirovino is an art collector, curator and art appraiser based in Salt Lake City, USA. He has been collecting contemporary art since the beginning of the 2000’s and with a long professional experience in the communication and marketing field in Los Angeles.

Considered as one of the major collectors of KAWS, over fifteen years Ronnie created one of the largest collections of his work in the world. Actually, his interest went far beyond that, and Ronnie has transitioned towards an analysis of new trends that pivot around some genres such as Urban Art and Pop Contemporary, plus more institutionalized young contemporary artists. His collection includes names such as Antony Gormley, Jonathan Chapline, Allison Zuckerman, Jonas Wood, Robert Nava, Invader, Rashid Johnson, Mike Lee, Susumu Kamijo, Lucy Bull, among others. Through Ronnie’s Instagram account @pirovino, he became a trend setter and a visible leader in this field not only in the USA, but also worldwide.

Last summer, he curated Trespassing, a groundbreaking online auction for Christie’s that spanned through different genres and tastes, but that had a strong anchor on Urban Art.

During our conversation, we analyzed his collection, the making and the results of Trespassing, along with the development of this type of art market and the new trends of the use of Instagram and the online Viewing Rooms.

Ronnie is also giving a hint on the second edition of Trespassing which will take place in 2021.

Giada Pellicari: Trespassing was a groundbreaking online auction in the history of Christie’s, as it was the first time that an appointment was clearly dedicated to a multi-category offering, anchored in Urban Art. I would love to take a step back, how this collaboration between you and Christie’s had started? How this idea came up?

Ronnie Pirovino: I first started thinking of the concept to present a more complex narrative in one singular auction, led by Urban Art, after my experience with a couple of previous auctions. I decided that Christie’s was my ideal partner and so I approached them with the idea. For them, embracing new markets and young collectors is part of their currentstrategy to reposition themselves into the auction house of the future. They instantly recognized the value in working together on this project, due to my following on Instagram and my deep expertise in post 1990-contemporary art, focused on Urban Art. The notion of creating a broad narrative starting with some examples of 1980’s graffiti to very recent works, tied together in one offering became an opportunity to show others how I’ve formed my own collection.

G: Trespassing was a great success as it has reached a total amount of USD 2,437,000, and many lots went far beyond their estimate. Is the art market finally ready for the field of Urban Art? What do you think its future will be?

R: Assolutamente.

R: Absolutely. Every item sold, which is a testament to the high amount of engagement the sale received. And the results all around were tremendous. We set several world records for artists, such as Katherine Bernhardt, Haroshi and Invader. Brent Estabrook and Jonathan Chapline were among the artists previously either never been represented or had been under-represented at the major auction level. This response is the culmination of new, young collectors as well as established collectors viewing Urban Art as a very promising and exciting aspect to today’s overall art market. I truly believe that this event had such outstanding support because the time has come for a new generation of art, artists and collectors who have social media as the platform that’s bringing us all together. Social media is essentially the new ‘street’, especially during this year of the pandemic.

G: In 2018, you have already collaborated with Heritage Auction House for a sale dedicated to your personal collection of KAWS toys. For Trespassing, instead, you were more involved as a curator of the auction along with Lindsay Griffith, Head of the Prints Department in New York.

The list of the Urban Art artists included some “mainstream” names such as KAWS, Invader, Banksy, JR, Shepard Fairey, but also more “niche” names such as Revok, Zephyr, Barry McGee, all together mixed with more “institutional” artists from the contemporary art system such as Jonas Wood, George Condo, Ai Weiwei.

How did you choose the artists to propose? Most of them were part of private collections that you were already aware of? Were these collections mostly focused on Street Art or were they general collections with no specific address?

R: In actuality, I wanted the auction sale with Christie’s, appropriately entitled Trespassing, to be a reflection of my own collection. I feel I have not followed anyone’s prescription or path in my collecting. I’ve managed to create a narrative from what may seem like unrelated subjects or works, but there has always been commonalities. The energy of the street being one of the elements, but also there’s a view into popular culture and other facets that mark our historical moments in time that provide a sort of glue to the concept. I believe that being able to curate a sale with Christie’s that included brand new artists that had never been featured at auction, also reflects my interests in having an arc to my own collection that integrates new voices, along with established ones and together resonate that much more powerfully.

G: I could say that this auction can be considered as a groundbreaking one for the Urban Art market, even if some important names of the Urban Art Scene were not listed, such as Phase2 and Rammellzee. Do you think that a more general audience is still not ready for the origins of the Graffiti movement?Phase2 can be considered one of the most important Graffiti pioneers and, unfortunately, we have recently faced his loss. After him passing away, do you think that there will be a discovery of his work in the art market and a raising of his prices?

R: More effort needs to be made to shed light onto the origins of Urban Art, institutionally. It’s a shame that Jeffrey Deitch was ousted from his position as Director of MOCA LA after he mounted one of the most seminal exhibitions in this regard entitled Art In the Streets. Jeffrey is among the few art professionals at his level that recognize the value and substance of Urban Art and he proved his thesis with this institutional show. The crowds were amazing but so was the controversy. There’s still a great amount of resistance to embrace art that doesn’t emerge from traditional sources. This is a threshold that’s being chipped away at like the Berlin Wall. Christie’s is to be commended for allowing me to present works that I’m certain some disagree should be in their platform, though the success only marks more clearly the erosion of this resistance. I hope Phase2 receives further recognition, but I haven’t heard of any institutions planning on mounting a retrospective of his career. His work is likely undervalued and an opportunity for future growth in value.

G: By analyzing the provenance of the listed works and the new collectors who bought them at this auction, would you be able to make a profile of the typical Urban Art collector?

R: Well, that’s an interesting question because it varies in many ways, but there’s one thing in common that I’ve noticed. Many of the collectors have embraced Urban Art without the trappings of traditions. It’s a very Punk Rock type of collector who is not shackled by established views or traditions of old. Many are young and art collecting is an exciting new endeavor and some are quite established and are very open to this new ‘category’ in art. Most of all, these collectors share the excitement of art that isn’t being promoted in obvious ways. They are the type of collector who is interested in how art is evolving and not necessarily in the past.
