Al momento il totale annuale per il dipartimento di arte contemporanea nel mondo è pari a 638.200.000 dollari che rappresenta una crescita del 25% sullo stesso periodo dell’anno precedente. Dei top lot presentati prima della vendita, Glenn Brown ha realizzato 5,193,250 GBP, nuovo record mondiale per l’artista. Era presentato a 2,200,000-2,800,000 GBP. Il ritratto di Francis Bacon in copertina del catalogo è stato aggiudicato a 4,521,250 GBP, meno della stima minima (5,000,000-7,000,000 GBP). Presente con tre lotti (13,14,15), aggiudicati tutti e tre al di sopra delle stime massime. “TERRORIST/TOURISTIN” di Martin Kippenberger era presentato a 500,000-700,000 GBP ed è stato venduto per 1,015,650 GBP. “INTERIOR GROSVENOR SQUARE” di Howard Hodgkin, dei primi anni Settata, ha realizzato 337,250 GBP, più del doppio della stima massima. Gli otto dipinti di Frank Auerbach con soggetto la sua modella Ruth, sono stati aggiudicati tutti nelle stime o al di sopra. “JOLLY” di Damien Hirst (realizzato tra il 1992 e il 1995 della serie Visual Candy, ha realizzato 601,250 GBP (st. 180,000-250,000 GBP).

La vendita da Christie’s ha totalizzato 132,796,200 sterline (9 lotti invenduti, 1 ritirato). 4 lotti venduti sopra i 10 milioni di sterline. 21 sopra il milione e nuovi record sono stati stabili per David Altmejd, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Marcel Broodthaers, Yves Klein e Beatriz Milhazes. Buona la partenza. Un “Untitled” di Dan Flavin del ’68, presentato a £100,000 – £150,000, ha realizzato £205,250. Il lotto seguente, Marcel Broodthaers “Surface de moules” ha realizzato £433,250 (st. £180,000 – £220,000). I due lotti successivi, il 5 e il 6, di Cy Twombly hanno rispettivamente realizzato £2,169,250 (st. £1,000,000 – £1,500,000) e £713,250 (st. £350,000 – £550,000). Il lotto 7, un Concetto spaziale del nostro Lucio Fontana, ha raggiunto £1,094,050 (st. £500,000 – £700,000). Il lotto successivo, Gerhard Richter, è stato aggiudicato a £1,161,250 (st. £600,000 – £800,000). Tutto in un crescendo fino ad arrivare al primo dei tre tanto acclamati Klein. Le spugne rosa, che erano presentate con stima a richiesta, hanno realizzato il nuovo record mondiale per l’artista. Con un’aggiudicazione di £23,561,250 ($36,708,430) superando davvero di poco il precedente record realizzato sempre da Christie’s ma a New York il maggio scorso (”FC 1″, aggiudicato a $36,482,500/£22,619,150). L’ “Anthropométrie (ANT 49)” – sempre di Klein – ha superato il milione di sterline (£1,295,650) e “Rélief éponge bleu (RE 51)” – che aveva fatto parte della collezione di Lucio Fontana – è passato di mano per £7,657,250 (st. £6,000,000 – £9,000,000).
“Struktur (2)” di Gerhard Richter, presentato a £9,000,000 – £12,000,000, è stato aggiudicato a £12,697,250. Il dipinto realizzato da Lucien Freud in giovane età, “Head of a Greek Man”, è stato aggiudicato a £3,401,250 (£1,500,000 – £2,000,000) e “Naked Portrait II” – sempre di Freud – a £4,297,250.
“Study for Self-Portrait ” di Francis Bacon, presentato con stima a richiesta, ha realizzato £21,545,250. E’ uno dei 12 autoritratti dell’artista a figura intera esistenti, quattro dei quali sono presenti nelle collezioni di musei internazionali. La figura ritratta è una fusione del volto di Bacon e del corpo di Lucien Freud.
Roy Lichtenstein, “Reflections on Jessica Helms”, ha totalizzato £4,017,250. L’ autoritratto di Jean-Michel Basquiat ha realizzato £12,921,250 ($20,131,309) realizzando il nuovo record mondiale per l’artista. Il precedente era stato realizzato da Phillip de Pury a New York il 10 maggio 2012 con un’aggiudicazione di $16,322,500.
“Untitled Butterfly (Black+cream-cicle) #681” di Mark Grotjahn (b. 1968) è stato molto conteso in sala. Offerto a £200,000 – £300,000, alla fine è stato aggiudicato a £836,450, ben più del doppio della stima massima. Tra gli ultimi lotti un mobile di Alexander Calder che ha realizzato £6,201,250 e un Mark Rothko dei primi anni ’60 venduto per £1,945,250
