La Evening Sale di Old Master & British Paintings da Sotheby’s ha totalizzato £32,268,650 ($50,600,470 / €40,174,408), quindi nella stima pre asta che si aggirava sui £26.7 – 40.4 milioni. Sei nuovi record mondiali realizzati. Top price è stato il dipinto di una battaglia navale di Willem van de Velde il giovane, “The Surrender of the Royal Prince during the Four Days’ Battle, 1 st – 4 th June 1666″ che è stato aggiudicato per £5.3milioni ($8.3m / €6.6m) dopo nove minuti di intensa competizione tra quattro bidders. Alla fine è stato acquiastato da un collezionista olandese. Alex Bell, Sotheby’s Co-Chairman, Old Master Paintings, Worldwide, ha commentato: “These are exciting times for the Old Masters and British Paintings market. We saw strong prices tonight in an extremely dynamic sale, in which collectors were prepared to go head- to-head for the very best works. The auction attracted an encouraging number of new clients to Sotheby’s and we saw consistently strong participation from the new markets.”
