Sotheby’s, 12/02/2014 – La Evening Sale di Sotheby’s ha totalizzato £ 87,971,500 (74,364,200 nel 2013). Tra i protagonisti della serata Gerhard Richter, fino a poco tempo fa l’artista vivente più quotato (è stato superato a novembre 2013 da Jeff Koons) presente in asta con 3 lotti.  Top price Wand (Wall), mai apparso prima in asta, che ha realizzato 17,442,500 sterline. E’ un olio su tela di 240×240 cm eseguito nel 1994 e rimasto per 16 anni nella collezione personale dell’artista. Ha preso parte ad importanti mostre nei musei di tutto il mondo. Era offerto a “stima a richiesta” (che si aggirava sui 15 milioni di sterline).  Le altre due opere dell’artista: un “Abstraktes Bild” degli anni ‘90 aggiudicato a 4,002,500 £ (stima £2-3 milioni) e un “Abstraktes Bild  (ROT-BLAU-GELB)” del 1973 , stimato 1-1,5 milioni, ma rimasto invenduto. Secondo classificato Cy Twombly con Untitled (Rome), un’opera di grandi dimensioni realizzata nel 1964 e stimata £5-7 milioni. Molti i rilanci tra sala e telefono. Alla fine è stata aggiudicata a 12,178,500 sterline (new auction record). Dipinta sette anni dopo il suo trasferimento a Roma, la tela si ispira all’Impero Romano e presenta un mix dei tratti caratteristici dell’artista: linee a matita scomposte, energiche pennellate e impronte rievocanti la pittura primitiva. Terzo posto per Andy Warhol: il suo “Mao” era  tra gli highlights della vendita con una stima compresa tra i £5,5m e i £7,5m ed è stato venduto per 7,586,500.  Fu dipinto subito dopo la visita in Cina del presidente Nixon, nel 1972. Warhol seppe cogliere la forza mediatica del presidente cinese e si appropriò del suo ritratto ufficiale, trasformando questo simbolo del comunismo in merce capitalista. Tra gli italiani in asta Alberto Burri, reduce del record dell’asta Christie’s dedicata all’arte povera dell’11 febbraio. Presente in catalogo con “Rosso Plastica”, realizzato nel 1963. Dopo i Sacchi, i Legni, i Ferri, Burri raggiunge l’apice del successo con un corpus di opere di grande impatto visivo costituite da strati sovrapposti di plastica fusa, e quest’opera si colloca tra i più importanti esempi di questa serie. Proveniente da un’importante collezione privata italiana, ha cambiato proprietario per 3,666,500 £.  Dei cinque lotti di Lucio Fontana solo uno è rimasto al palo (una terracotta del ’59/’60). Gli altri, tagli e vetri, aggiudicati intorno alle stime. Un importante dipinto di Lucian Freud, considerato da lui stesso tra i suoi ritratti più riusciti e realizzato al culmine della sua creatività, che ritrae Lady Lambton, figura centrale della vita dell’artista per oltre 25 anni, è stato aggiudicato a  £ 2,994,500. Il dipinto è stato messo in asta dal figlio della donna, Edward Lord Durham ed è stato incluso in molte importanti mostre internazionali. Tra le aggiudicazioni che hanno superato la stima massima: Lucien Smith (lotto 1), Frank Auerbach (lotto 14), Sigmar Polke (lotto 19), Jean-Michel Basquiat (lotto 25), Andy Warhol (lotti 27 e 37), Oscar Murillo (lotto 30), Ed Ruscha (lotto 31), Eduardo Chillida (lotto 44)

Christie’s, 13/02/2014 – L’asta serale di Christie’s ha totalizzato £ 124,192,000 contro i £81,668,850 del febbraio 2013. 9 lotti sono rimasti invenduti su 49 offerti. La vendita si è aperta con un sorriso. L’auctioneer della casa d’aste ha indossato un simpatico cerchietto con delle orecchie di topolino per richiamare l’attenzione proprio sul primo lotto: una rappresentazione minimalista realizzata da Damien Hirst di Mickey Mouse il più celebre personaggio creato da Walt Disney. L’opera è stata messa all’asta a scopo benefico per sostenere Kids Company ed è stata venduta per £902,500, ben più delle stime (300/500.000 £). Top price per Francis Bacon (e prezzo record per una singolo pannello dell’artista venduto in asta). Dopo il record assoluto di novembre 2013 quando il suo “Trittico di Lucian Freud” è stato venduto per 142 milioni  di dollari a New York,  stasera “Portrait of George Dyer Talking”  è stato venduto per  £42,194,500. Fu realizzato da Bacon nel 1966 e il protagonista della tela è George Dyer, amante e ispiratore dell’artista. I due si conobbero a Soho nell’autunno del 1963 e Dyer diventò il principale soggetto dei dipinti di quel decennio memorabile. Era stimato intorno ai 30 milioni di sterline. E’ il più grande tra i ritratti dedicati a Dyer ed è il più significativo tra quelli presentati all’asta negli ultimi 10 anni. Secondo e terzo posto per gli altri top lot annunciati prima dell’asta: un grande “Abstraktes Bild ” di Gerhard Richter del 1989 battuto a £19,570,500 e un uovo realizzato da Jeff Koons venduto per £14,082,500, cifra significativa ma lontana dal record mondiale di $58,4 milioni raggiunto da Christie’s a New York lo scorso Novembre con Balloon Dog, che ha proclamato Koons l’artista vivente più costoso al mondo.  Appartiene alla stessa serie “Celebration”, fu realizzato tra il 1994 e il 2006 ed era stimato £10.000-15.000. I primi lotti sono stati aggiudicati ben al di sopra delle stime. Tra questi alcuni lavori degli YBAs come “Plan” di Jenny Saville che era stimato £800,/1,200,000 e ha raggiunto il nuovo record mondiale con una aggiudicazione di  £2,098,500. In catalogo “Capelli neri” di Domenico Gnoli  del 1961 che, presentato con una stima di £1.2-1.8 milioni, ne ha realizzati ben £7,026,500 ($11,544,540), superando così il record precedente di 3.676.961 $ realizzato sempre a Londra da Christie’s nel 2011 con “Busto femminile di dorso”. Altri nuovi record anche per Gary Hume con “Vicius” a £410,500 ($681,430), Neo Rauch che con “Platz (Square)” ha superato di oltre due volte la stima minima (£1,058,500) e Gerald Laing con Brigitte Bardot a £902,500 ($1,498,150). Tra le altre aggiudicazioni di rilievo, si segnalano Peter Doig con “Tour de Charvet” (£2,378,500); Cy Twombly con “Untitled (Rome)” (£2,658,500); Josef Albers con “Study For Homage to the Square: R – III a – 6 ” (£986,500); Nicolas de Staël con “Selinunte” (£2,882,500); Yves Klein con ANT 14 (£1,706,500). E ancora Eduardo Chillida e Louise Bourgeois
