THE 28TH EDITION OF THE ART BRUSSELS ART FAIR, WHICH WILL RUN FROM THE 23RD UNTIL THE 26TH OF APRIL, PROMISES TO BE ONE OF THE MOST TALKED ABOUT INTERNATIONAL ART FAIRS OF THE COMING SEASON. A VARIED AND HIGH-QUALITY MIX OF YOUNG TALENT AND ESTABLISHED NAMES WARRANTS A FIRST-CLASS EVENT.

Brussels, capital of Europe, has defined itself more and more as the centre of contemporary art. Its central location in Europe, the attractive rental prices, and the much appreciated cosy atmosphere make that an ever growing number of foreign artists have settled in the capital.
Belgium is also renowned internationally for its large concentration of contemporary art collectors. The establishment of a number of important international galleries in the city has confirmed Brussels’ importance. This trend adds to the prestige of Art Brussels.

Over the years, the fair has evolved into a not-to-be-missed rendezvous of global acclaim for curators, critics, collectors, and all those who wish to stay abreast of the newest tendencies in the international art field. Approximately 30.000 visitors, amongst which 30% foreigners, are expected at Art Brussels in April 2010.

An international selection committee selects 170 participants from the numerous applications. The International Committee consists of 4 Belgian and 4 foreign gallery owners. The committee welcomes newcomer Thomas Krinzinger to the 2010 selection. The galleries selected by the committee are divided into three clear and distinct zones. Well-established names are presented in the Art Galleries zone, while Young Talent remains reserved to galleries presenting mainly up-and-coming and innovative artists. The First Call zone finally, presents young, promising galleries who make their debut at the fair. They are selected by a new First Call Committee, made up for the first time of two gallery owners: Michael Callies – Dépendance and Wim Peeters – Office Baroque, collector Wilfried Cooreman, and curator Nicolaus Schafhausen.

Aside from their presentation in one of the existing zones, galleries are given the opportunity to present a Solo Show highlighting one particular artist. The best Solo Show will be awarded the 10.000$ ‘Illy Prize’ by the Collectors Committee. The name of the winner will be disclosed on April 22nd. The complete list of participating galleries can be consulted on the Art Brussels website (www.artbrussels.be) from December 2009 on, One fourth of all participants are from Belgium, the others are from European countries and the rest of the world. They present a wide variety of works by young talent and established artists and exhibit a captivating mix of contemporary paintings, sculptures, photography, video, installations and performances.

In a few years, Art Brussels has become an event with numerous side activities which have turned the fair into a veritable contemporary art week.

Aside from the fair’s Artists’ Project, which invites artists to create an on-site intervention at the fair, the programme includes, yet again, the sculpture project ‘Art in the City’. An extensive off-programme with guided visits of private collections, museums, exhibitions, as well as debates, parties and dinners has been worked out in collaboration with museums, galleries, project spaces, and collectors. This gives both local
and foreign art lovers an excellent opportunity to discover why Brussels is considered the foremost European platform for contemporary art.
