Il prossimo 6 luglio Sotheby’s proporrà a Londra una veduta di Venezia di Francesco Guardi. La particolarità di questo dipinto, “Venice, a view of the Rialto Bridge, Looking North, from the Fondamenta del Carbon”, sono le sue dimensioni munumentali, 115×199.5 cm. Si tratta infatti di uno dei quattro dipinti di grande formato che l’artista dipinse intorno al 1760. Uno di questi andò distrutto in un incendio a metà del XX secolo. Un altro fu venduto, sempre da Sotheby’s, nel 1989 per oltre 10 milioni di sterline, ad oggi il record d’artista per Guardi (“View of the Giudecca and the Zattere”). Questo (e il suo pendant) sono rimasti uniti fino a tempi recenti.

Alex Bell, International Head of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Department, ha commentato: “This dramatic, atmospheric evocation of 18th-century Venice is impressive not only for its scale, but also for its extraordinary pictorial qualities – its impressionistic handling and virtuoso brushwork – as well as for its exceptional provenance, having been in only two family collections since it was painted. As we have seen on so many occasions, when works of this quality and rarity come to the market, the opportunity they represent often proves irresistible to collectors.”

La veduta fu acquistata nel 1768 a Venezia dall’inglese Chaloner Arcedeckne e rimase presso la sua famiglia fino al 1891, quando venne comprato dall’irlandese Sir Edward Guinness. Questo è l’ultimo passaggio sul mercato del dipinto.

Fin dalla sua realizzazione, è rimasto in mani private. Per questo è stato esposto raramente. L’ultima mostra pubblica è stata nel 1955 alla Royal Academy (European Masters from the 18th Century).

La stima si aggira sui 20 milioni di sterline.
