Il 5 e il 6 luglio Londra sarà teatro dell’usuale appuntamento con le vendite serali dedicate ai dipinti antichi. Si parte il 5 luglio con la Evening Sale di Christie’s, che offrirà un eccezionale e raro disegno di Michelangelo, uno studio preparatorio per la celebre “Battaglia di Cascina”, l’ultimo ancora in mani private. E’ stimato 3-5 milioni di sterline. Viene presentato sul mercato per la prima volta, dopo essere stato nella stessa collezione per 30 anni.

Benjamin Peronnet, Director and International Head of Old Master and 19th Century Drawings, Christie’s: “This drawing relates to one of the highpoints of the Renaissance – the commissions for the Sala del Gran Consiglio in Florence. The young Michelangelo was pitched directly against his elder rival, Leonardo da Vinci, as both were commissioned to execute large-scale depictions of battle scenes. Sadly neither exists, and there are few relics relating to these epic masterpieces. This drawing offers an exceptionally rare, direct link to one of the greatest Western masterpieces that never was, and offers us a glimpse into the mind of a genius at the peak of his powers as he freely put his thoughts to paper. We’re very excited to be offering the work at auction for the first time, and to be able to show a rarely seen drawing by Michelangelo to the public in Hong Kong, New York and London.” 

Tra gli altri hightlights “Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a Trainer, a Stable-Lad, and a Jockey” di George Stubbs (1724-1806). E’ offerto all’asta dalla collezione Woolavington e la sua stima si aggira sui 20 milioni di sterline. John Stainton, Senior Director of British Pictures, Christie’s: “This is a truly exceptional example of 18th century painting which holds immense importance on many levels – as an Old Master picture, as a great masterpiece of British Art, and as one of the finest sporting pictures ever painted. It is a great privilege for us to be able to work with this painting and to offer it at auction. Stubbs is an artist admired and collected by individuals and institutions from all around the world, and we look forward to presenting the opportunity for clients to acquire one of his greatest works at Christie’s on 5 July.”

La Evening Sale di Sotheby’s si svolgerà il giorno seguente, il 6 luglio. Andranno all’incanto diverse opere eccezionali per qualità e rarità. La stima complessiva di vendita si aggira sui 31 milioni di sterline per 73 dipinti. Tra gli highlights è presente una monumentale veduta di Venezia di Francesco Guardi, diversi capolavori di autori del calibro di Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Correggio, Pieter Brueghel il giovane, John Constable, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Hans Schäufelein e Frans Jansz.

Alex Bell, Sotheby’s Co-Chairman, Old Master Paintings, Worldwide, ha commentato: “It is unprecedented for Sotheby’s to offer in a single sale one of the greatest Venetian view paintings by Franesco Guardi, together with a newly discovered work by one of the key artists of the Italian Renaissance, Correggio, as well as two newly identified paintings by Sir Anthony Van Dyck. These works will appeal to collectors seeking museum-quality works of extraordinary provenance.”

“Venice, a View of the Rialto Bridge, Looking North, from the Fondamenta del Carbon” è stimato 15-25 milioni di sterline ed è il lotto più importante della vendita. Le dimensioni sono 115 x 199.5 cm e fa parte di una serie di quattro dipinti di queste dimensioni che Guardi dipinse intorno al 1760. Anche la provenienza è eccezionale. È stato messo in vendita solo una volta da quando fu acquistato nel 1768 dall’inglese Chaloner Arcedeckne ed è rimasto in eridità ai suoi discendenti fino al 1981, rimandendo sempre (eccetto che per un brevissimo periodo) in mani private.

Tra gli altri highligths, andrà all’incanto un inedito “Ritratto di un Monaco Carmelitano” del pittore fiammingo del XVII Secolo, Sir Anthony Van Dyck. Lo scorso anno, durante una stima da Sotheby’s a Parigi, George Gordon, Presidente del Dipartimento internazionale di Dipinti Antichi, notò un dipinto di eccezionale qualità e osservò che composizione e tecnica erano riconducibili allo stile del giovane Van Dyck nel periodo in cui lavorava presso lo studio di Rubens. Numerosi studiosi che hanno avuto l’opportunità di analizzare il dipinto, convengono nell’attribuirlo alla produzione di Van Dyck tra 1617-1620. L’opera è presentata in asta con una stima di 600,000-800,000 sterline.

George Gordon, Presidente del Dipartimento internazionale di Dipinti Antichi ha commentato così la scoperta: “This is a very exciting discovery and a painting of really extraordinary quality and visceral power. Van Dyck probably painted this intense portrait in Rubens’ house in Antwerp and the genius of the artist’s touch and the expressive power of his brushwork cannot fail to make a forceful impression on the viewer“.
