Oltre 375 milioni: il totale più alto nella storia di Sotheby’s. Il capolavoro di Mark Rothko, “No.1 (Royal Red and Blue)” ha realizzato 75,122,500 USD. Era stimato 35,000,000-50,000,000. Sicuramente il prezzo è salito ma senza sfondare  i 100 milioni, come da previsioni di alcuni. Questo dipinto è il secondo top-price  per l’autore. Il primo posto è stato raggiunto, sempre nel 2012 ma da Christie’s, da “Orange, Red, Yellow” aggiudicato a 86,882,500 dollari. Nuovi record sono stati realizzati per Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Hans Hofmann, Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell e Wade Guyton.

La Evening Sale di Christie’s ha realizzato $412,253,100 (£259,719,453 /€321,557,418) appena al sopra della stima massima pre-asta: si tratta del totale più alto per un’asta di arte contemporanea da Christie’s. 67 lotti venduti su 73 offerti e il 92% di venduto per lotto. World record per Franz Kline (lotto 17) e per i tulipani di Jeff Koons (lotto 38) aggiudicati a bidders al telefono, per Jean-Michel Basquiat (lotto 42) e per Richard Diebenkorn. La statua della libertà 3D di Andy Warhol è stato il top price della vendita con un’aggiudicazione di $43,762,500. Mentre “Prag 1883″ di Gerhard Richter, offerto all’asta dal milionario Steven Cohen, è rimasto al palo.
