Christie’s ha annunciato ufficialmente che ad autunno 2013 ha in calendario delle aste a Shanghai. La novità è che così è  diventata la prima casa d’aste internazionale ad avevre una licenza per operare in modo indipendente in Cina.

Christie’s infatti ha coltivato relazioni a lungo termine con la comunità dell’arte in Cina fin dal lontano 1994,  quando ha aperto – per prima –  un ufficio di rappresentanza a Shanghai. Negli anni il numero di clienti provenienti dalla Cina continentale che partecipano alle aste  di Christie’s tra Londra, New York, Hong Kong e Parigi è cresciuto tanto da raddoppiare dal 2008.

Steven P. Murphy, Chief Executive Officer of Christie’s, ha commentato: “This development makes Christie’s the first international auction house able to directly conduct auctions in China under its own brand, and will offer collectors a more direct access to our global network and expertise. The art market continues to grow at a tremendous rate due to the burgeoning interest in art particularly in Asia and China; now Christie’s will be able to engage with our clients in Shanghai in the same way that we have done over many years in London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong.”
