Masterpiece London in association with Thomas Dane Gallery present: Phillip King an exhibition of outdoor sculpture in Ranelagh Gardens, Chelsea. Premiering at Masterpiece London and on view throughout the summer.
In celebration of Masterpiece London’s 5th edition and Phillip King’s 80th birthday, the fair will present a curated exhibition, in association with Thomas Dane Gallery, of King’s significant large-scale outdoor works. These pieces will be exhibited within the magnificent South Grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, including Ranelagh Gardens, as part of Masterpiece London.
A number of King’s sculptural forms and modes will be offered for sale during the exhibition, and will range from his earlier works in the 1960s to present day. Highlights include one of King’s most iconic cone sculptures ‘Genghis Khan’, 1963/2013, as well as previously unseen pieces such as the 8m high ‘High Sky and Bling’, 2013 and colourful ‘Ring Reel’, 2013. Other works on show from King’s early oeuvre include ‘Angle Poise’, 1973, ‘Slant’, 1966, ‘Spring – a – Ling’, 1983 and ‘Bus Shelter’, 2000.
Phillip King (b.1934) is a leading figure among the group of British sculptors known as the New Generation who came to critical acclaim during the mid-1960s. He was born in Tunisia and moved to Britain in 1945 where he studied at Cambridge University. At Anthony Caro’s invitation, he studied sculpture at Central St Martins during the 1960s and went on to work as an assistant to Henry Moore. He has been a legendary tutor at London’s most distinguished art schools, including St Martins from 1959–1980 with Anthony Caro and Eduardo Paolozzi, and the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin (1979–1980). He was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London from 1980–1990, and was made Professor Emeritus at the College in 1990. King was elected Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, London in 1990, a post which he held until his election as President of the Royal Academy in 1999 (King was President until 2004). Phillip King has had several retrospective exhibitions; at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Forte de Belvedere, Florence, and most recently at Le Consortium, Dijon in 2013. King was also commissioned to create work for Expo ’70 in Tokyo and represented Britain alongside Bridget Riley at the 1968 Venice Biennale.

Entrance to the exhibition is free to the public and the pieces will be on show during the fair and afterwards, until 29 August. Tickets to the fair are available to buy, either from the Masterpiece London website, or at the fair, 26 June – 2 July. The fair opens with a Preview on Wednesday 25 June.
