1 3.05.2014 – L’asta serale di Post-War & Contemporary Art da Christie’s ha totalizzato $744,944,000 (£439,516,960/€543,809,120) con 68 lotti venduti su 72 offerti. Sono stati superati i $691,583,000 della evening del novembre 2013, quando (sommando anche le day sale ) si era raggiunto il totale più alto per un’asta nella storia del mercato dell’arte con $782,368,375. Quella vendita era rimasta storica anche per l’aggiudicazione a $142.4 milioni per un trittico di Bacon, diventata in quell’occasione l’opera d’arte più cara in assoluto venduta all’asta. Moltissime le aggiudicazioni che hanno superato, anche di molto, le stime e molti nuovi record. Top price per Barnett Newman con “Black Fire I” che era presentato con stima a richiesta e ha realizzato il nuovo record per l’artista con una aggiudicazione di $84,165,000 . Il precedente risaliva al maggio del 2013, quando “Onement VI” fu acquistato (e si era vociferato da Miuccia Prada) per $43,845,000 da Sotheby’s a New York. Secondo posto per Francis Bacon con “Three Studies for a Portrait of John Edwards” del 1984 che è stato acquistato per $80,805,000 da un privato asiatico. Mentre è rimasto anonimo l’acquirente del “Senza titolo” di Mark Rothko che si è conquistato il terzo posto con $66,245,000. Buyer d’eccezione per “Race Riot” di Andy Warhol . La Gagosian Gallery se lo è conquistato per $62,885,000. Insieme al re del pop, è stato acquistato della galleria anche “If You” di Christopher Wool per $23,685,000. La storica “White Marilyn” dell’artista di Pittsburgh non è salita sul podio ma ha quasi triplicato la stima massima con $41,045,000. Tra i top ten anche Alexander Calder. “ Poisson volant (Flying Fish)” un mobile del 1957 della collezione Bergman, è entrato nella raccolta di un privato asiatico per $25,925,000, diventando così il nuovo record per l’artista. Anche Joseph Cornell ha superato il suo prezzo più alto con “Medici Slot Machine “. Presentato a 2,5 – 3,500,000 dollari, è stato venduto per $7,781,000 (Il record precedente risaliva al maggio 2013 quando sempre da Christie’s “Magic Soap Bubble Set” era stato venduto per $4,827,750). Il lotto faceva parte come il mobile di Calder della collezione Bergman. Dei sette Cornell in catalogo ne sono stati venduti sei. Andando con ordine, già il primo lotto, “Box #102” di Lucas Samaras, ha superato di gran lunga le aspettative. Era offerto a 80/120 mila dollari ed ha realizzato il nuovo record per l’artista con $281,000 (precedente $194,500, Sotheby’s, giugno 2010). New record anche per Robert Gober con “The Silent Sink” a $4,197,000 (precedente: $3,625,000 per “Untitled” da Phillips de Pury & Company nel maggio 2008). Prezzo più alto mai pagato in asta anche per Salvatore Scarpitta . “The Corn Queen” è stato battuto a $1,445,000. La stessa opera era stata aggiudicata nell’ottobre del 2011 da Sotheby’s a Londra per $904,550. Anche Joan Mitchell ha superato se stessa. Il grande “Untitled” (248.9 x 203.8 cm.) del 1960 da 6 milioni di dollari è arrivato a $11,925,000 (precedente: $9,322,500, Sotheby’s New York 2011). Stessa sorte per Frank Stella: “Abajo” anche se ha passato di poco la stima minima con $6,661,000, ha comunque superato i $5,060,000 di “Tomlinson Court Park, second version” del lontano novembre del 1989 da Sotheby’s. Nuovi record anche per Martin Puryear (lotto 48) e Robert Mangold (lotto 58).

14.05.2014 – Si è conclusa totalizzando $364,379,000 la Evening Sale di Sotheby’s a New York dedicata ai contemporanei. Una cifra importante che supera il risultato del maggio 2013, ma che ancora resta inferiore al totale più alto mai registrato in una vendita di Post-War & Contemporary, $381M, risalente allo storico novembre 2013. 81 lotti in vendita, 13 invenduti e 2 ritirati – una Coca-Cola di Warhol e un Senza Titolo di Cindy Sherman – e ben 10 nuovi record d’artista. Si aggiudica la corona del top price il Re della Pop Art Andy Warhol : il suo Six Self Portraits passa di mano per $30,125,000 . Segue Gerhard Richter con Blau che, aggiudicato per $28,725,000 , sfiora di una manciata di milioni il suo attuale record ottenuto esattamente un anno fa con Domplatz, Mailand , opera con la quale era stato proclamato l’artista vivente più costoso al mondo. Nonostante a novembre 2013 con un Balloon Dog gli avesse rubato il titolo, Jeff Koons occupa in questa vendita il terzo gradino del podio grazie al suo Popeye battuto per $28,165,000 . Resta però invenduta la sua teca contenente tre palloni, in origine stimata $4-6milioni. La medaglia di legno va invece a Jean-Michel Basquiat che vende quella che si classifica la sua quarta opera più cara in assoluto: si tratta di Undiscovered Genius of the Mississippi Delta, assegnata ad un nuovo proprietario per $23,685,000. E se il Pop Artist per antonomasia Andy Warhol realizza altri due risultati importanti con Big Electric Chair venuta a 20,437,000$ e con 12 Mona Lisas (Reversal Series) battuta per 11,365,000$ , non da meno è Yves Klein che con Rélief Eponge Bleu (RE 51) raggiunge i $16,000,000 , rispettando le stime pre-asta. Non trova però un’offerta valida la sua La Marseillaise (Ant 138) che, stimata $6-8m resta invenduta. 12,205,000$ è la cifra totalizzata da Mark Rothko con il suo Untitled nei toni caldi dei rossi, mentre un’opera datata 1985 di Roy Lichtenstein viene aggiudicata per $6,549,000 . $8,565,000 è invece il risultato dell’unico Pollock messo in vendita: Black and White Painting. Tra gli artisti asiatici resta invenduto un Takaski Murakami , mentre Yayoi Kusama con No. E – ultimo lotto all’asta – supera il doppio della sua stima massima e cambia proprietario per $3,189,000. Dei quattro Willem De Kooning in catalogo solo la metà trova proprietario: Montauk III per $10,245,000 ; Untitled XIII per $4,533,000 . Mentre hanno successo le quattro opere di Richard Prince offerte nella serata, due delle quali superano la valutazione degli esperti di Sotheby’s.Piovono record : 10 in totale gli artisti che raggiungono le cifre più alte fino ad ora ottenute. Da Cindy Sherman che aggiudica Untitled #93 per $3,861,000 , a Dan Flavin che vende una delle sue opere di light-art per poco più di $3milioni . E ancora Matthew Barney, Adam McEwan, Sarah Lucas, Wade Guyton, James Rosenquist e Julian Schnabel . Ma soprattutto Keith Haring che con Untitled (September 14, 1986) venduto per 4,869,000$ raddoppia quello che era il suo precedente record.
