Nelle sale di King Street da Christie’s si è alzata una metaforica ‘fumata nera’ quando il lotto 16A, il Papa di Francis Bacon, si è fermato a 58 milioni di sterline. Era partito da 50 milioni, ma arrivato a 58 l’auctioneer Jussi Pylkkanen dopo un’attesa di alcuni minuti ha dovuto dichiarare il fatidico Pass . “Study of Red Pope 1962. 2nd version 1971″, che non si vedeva in pubblico da ben 45 anni, è rimasto inaspettatamente invenduto.
Esposto per la prima volta il 26 ottobre 1971, nella leggendaria retrospettiva di Francis Bacon al Grand Palais a Parigi, “Study of Red Pope 1962. 2nd version 1971″ è stato realizzato nei sei mesi precedenti l’aprile 1971. Si tratta dell’unico esempio di dipinto che unisce le due più grandi ossessioni di Bacon: il Papa e George Dyer, il suo amante e musa. Era offerto con stima a richiesta.
Il catalogo della evening ha totalizzato 99,522,750 GBP contro i 34,266.000 del 2016. Sette i nuovi record realizzati per Grayson Perry (200.000 GBP), Howard Hodgkin (1.688.750), David Salle (608.750), Antony Gormely (5,296,250), Hurvin Anderson (2,648,750), Tony Bevan (112,500), Amy Sillman (440,750).
Il top price se l’è aggiudicato il teschio rosso di Basquiat con la battuta finale a £16,546,250 / $21,625,949, una cifra ben lontana dai 60 milioni attesi per il Bacon ma che soddisfa anche perchè il ricavato andrà a beneficio della Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) , che supporta un network di scuole pubbliche (charter school) degli Stati Uniti.
Al secondo posto della classifica delle migliori aggiudicazioni troviamo Peter Doig con “Camp Forestia” che è stato battuto a £15,421,550 / $20,155,574. Mentre il terzo classificato è stato l’altro Bacon , “Head with Raised Arm” del 1955 che ha superato le stime fermandosi a £11,483,750. Non era esposto al pubblico da oltre 50 anni. L’ultima volta che è stato in una mostra risale al 1962 in occasione dell’esposizione alla Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna di Torino. L’anno seguente fu acquistato dal venditore di stasera che secondo Colin Gleadell del Telegraph poteva essere uno dei discendenti del produttore cinematografico Carlo Ponti o quelli di Gianni Agnelli…
L’angelo di Antony Gormely ha decisamente spiccato il volo. Ha superato di poco la stima più bassa ma, come accennato, ha realizzato il suo nuovo record d’asta a 5,296,250 pound.
“A Case for an Angel I” del 1989 è stato fuso da un calco del corpo dello stesso artista, l’apertura alare misura ben 8,5 metri ed è una azzeccata metafora del desiderio di volare degli esseri umani.
Due nuovi record sono stati realizzati anche durante l’asta Thinking Italian (totale 32,196,250 contro i 18,680,250 del 2016). Il top lot è stato per Lucio Fontana che dopo le performance non eccellenti di ieri sera in New Bond Street stasera è tornato a brillare. Il suo romantico “Concetto spaziale, In piazza San Marco di notte con Teresita”, del 1961, è stato battuto a£10,021,250. Si tratta di uno dei più bei dipinti del ciclo delle Venezie.
Tra gli altri highlight “Uomo che guarda un negativo” (1967) di Michelangelo Pistoletto (e l’uomo nello specchio è Boetti) che ha fatto £3,721,250 e ha realizzato il nuovo record d’asta per l’artista. Quello precedente era di 2,322,500 ed era stato realizzato dagli “Amanti” del 1962 nel 2014.
Altro personale top price infranto da Franco Angeli: il suo Fiore partigiano da 55 mila sterline è salito fino a 206,250 (precedente 100 mila sterline).
Dei tre Burri in catalogo, due sono rimasti invenduti ma il “Sacco” del 1953 ha recuperato per tutti arrivando a 7,546,250, medaglia d’argento dell’asta.
