5 invenduti su 42 lotti offerti e 15 nuovi record realizzati (13 per artista 2 per medium). Come il bellissimo “Chop Suey” di Edward Hopper che è stato venduto per 91,875,000, al di sopra della stima di 70 milioni. L’opera, del 1929, era la più importante dell’artista ancora in mani private ha realizzato il nuovo record anche per un’opera d’arte americana venduta in asta. I primi tre lotti da soli hanno realizzato un terzo del risultato. Medaglia d’argento per “Woman as Landscape” di Willem de Kooning a 68,937,500 $ (nuovo record) e bronzo per “Composition with Red Strokes” di Jackson Pollock a 55,437,500.
«Il mio vero interesse per l’arte non è iniziato fino al 1957. Non ero un intenditore d’arte. Ho visitato il Louvre perché era una parte così integrante di Parigi, e quello che ho trovato lì mi ha cambiato» ha raccontato Ebsworth (1934-2018) nella sua autobiografia. L’origine di questa raccolta, una delle più importanti di arte moderna americana, ha tuttavia origine in Francia. Il suo primo viaggio a Parigi durò tre giorni e si rivelò un momento cruciale della sua vita. Passeggiando nei corridoi del Louvre disse di sentirsi in soggezione circondato com’era da opere d’arte così grandi che avevano lasciato un’impressione così forte in lui da provare il desiderio di voler “capire le immagini, i periodi di tempo da cui provenivano e gli artisti che li avevano creati”.
«Senza mentore e senza lezioni, mi sono accostato alla storia dell’arte solo leggendo e guardando. I miei occhi erano i miei mentori» ha raccontato Ebsworth «Nel settore immobiliare, dicono che tre cose contano: posizione, posizione, posizione. Per me, collezionare arte riguardava qualità, qualità, qualità». I risultati di questa sera sembrano aver confermato questa affermazione.
