L’ultra ottantenne inglese David Hockney toglie il primato a Jeff Koons di “artista vivente più pagato in asta”
Christie’s chiude l’art week delle evening sale newyorkesi con una vendita di arte contemporanea e del dopoguerra che vale ben 360,276,250 $. Nonostante qualche ritardo dovuto alla prima neve caduta oggi sulla Grande Mela, “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with TwoFigures)” realizzato da Hockney nel 1972 è stato battuto a 90,312,500 $ da un soddisfatto Jussi Pylkkänen al di sopra della stima di 80 milioni.
L’opera diventa così la più cara in assoluto battuta in asta di un artista vivente. Togliendo il primato al cagnolino arancione “Orange balloon dog” del 1994 di Koons che era stato battuto a 58,4 milioni di dollari nel 2013.
La piscina di Hockney era stato affidato alla casa d’aste dal multimiliardario Joe Lewis, che possiede la squadra di calcio londinese dei Tottenham Hotspur e fa affari nell’immobiliare. L’opera è considerata fra le più iconiche di Hockney ed è stata recentemente esposta nella retrospettiva dell’artista al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York.
Il precedente record d’asta per l’artista era stato fissato lo scorso 16 maggio con “Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica” del 1990, venduto per $28,453,000 da Sotheby’s.
Tra gli altri risultati di rilievo si segnalano Mark Rothko con “Untitled (Rust, Blacks on Plum)…” a 35,712,500; Richard Diebenkorn con “Ocean Park #137” a 22,587,500; Francis Bacon con “Study of Henrietta Moraes Laugh” a 21,687,500 $ e Jean-Michel Basquiat con “Discography Two” a 20,900,000.
’21 Feuilles Blanches’ di Alexander Calder da $5,000,000 è arrivato a $17,975,000 e continua il forte interesse nei confronti delle opere di KAWS: ‘CHUM (KCB7)’ da $300,000 ha fatto $2,412,500.
Oltre al mega record di Hockney, nuovi top price in asta per ‘Window’ di Philip Guston (per il medium) che da $300,000 di stima è salito vertiginosamente fino all’aggiudicazione d $3,132,500, Sam Gilliam con ‘Lady Day II’, (2,172,500), Robert Colescott con ‘Cultural Exchange’ ($912,500), Pierre Soulages con ‘Peinture 186 x 143 cm, 23 décembre 1959’ ($10,600,000). Tra gli invenduti si segnala la palstica del nostro Alberto Burri (stima 4-6 milioni). Una grande opera dell’artista di Città di Castello è rimasta al palo anche da Phillps (leggi qui).
Il pittore americano Wayne Thiebaud ha festeggiato oggi il suo 98° compleanno. Il mercato dell’arte gli ha fatto il suo regalo con l’aggiudicazione del dipinto ‘Happy Birthday’ a $2,052,500.
