99,479,500 £ e diversi nuovi record conquistati. Questo il bilancio dell’asta Defining British Art che ha chiuso questa settimana dell’arte a Londra. Questa vendita speciale è stata organizzata per festeggiare il 250° anniversario della maison Christie’s, che ha celebrato questo traguardo anche con eventi e mostre.
La vendita ha proposto un mix di opere del XX secolo, seguendo l’onda – fortunata – del successo delle prime aste tematiche newyorkesi del 2015, Looking Forward to the Past e The Artist’s Muse.
Tra i top lot annunciati prima dell’asta un intimo ritratto di famiglia di Lucian Freud dipinto nel 1992 offerto con stima a richiesta. Ma i bid non sono arrivati e la grande tela (168.3 x 146.7 cm.) è diventata l’eclatante l’invenduto della serata, fermandosi a 16 milioni. Le aspettative di realizzo erano sui 18 milioni.
Oltre al Freud, altre 4 opere sono rimaste invednute e 2 sono state ritirate prima dell’asta, un tipico paesaggio industriale di Laurence Stephen Lowry che era stimato £1,500,000 – £2,500,000 e un colorato paesaggio di Winston Churchill, che oltre a muovere i fili della politica si dilettava anche con il pennello. Era stimato 600/1 milione £.
Il top lot della serata è stato invece una scuLtura di Henry Moore, un bronzo lungo ben 230 cm. “Reclining Figure: Festival”, ideata nel 1951 e fusa in una edizione di cinque più una prova d’artista, era presentata a 15/20 milioni di sterline e, dopo essere stata molto contesa, è stata venduta a £24,722,500, realizzando il nuovo record d’asta per l’artista. Il precedente, per un’altra fusione di questa scultura, era di 19 milioni di sterline.
Francis Bacon ha fatto £20,242,500 con “Version No. 2 of Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe” (1968) che era presentatA con stima a richiesta. Raffigura uno dei pochi nudi femminili nell’opera dell’artista. Era già passato in asta nel 2006, da Sotheby’s, e in quell’occasione aveva realizzato il prezzo record per l’artista in asta (clicca qui). Forse il soggetto è stato preso da una fotografia di Henrietta Moraes, ritratta anche in altre occasioni da Bacon e parte della cerchia ristretta di persone frequentate dall’artista.
Oltre a quello di Moore, tra gli altri record snocciolati nella serata “Golden Hours” del 1864 di Frederic Lord Leighton, per la prima volta sul mercato da un secolo, che con £3,274,500 ha infranto il precedente top price di 1.200.000 sterline per “Il braccialetto”, andato in asta da Phillips nel 2000. Il grande bronzo “Ritorno a Venezia” di Lynn Chadwick (£1,650,500) e “Untitled (Diagonal Curve)” di Bridget Riley (£4,338,500).
La vista di Gerusalemme dipinta da David Roberts ha fatto £962,500. Una cifra al di sotto della stima minima ma che gli ha comunque fatto centrare il nuovo record d’asta. Il precedente era di 524.500 sterline, battute nel 2007 per un panorama de Il Cairo.
Tra le migliori aggiudicazioni, la Regina d’Inghilterra ritratta da Alfred James Munnings alle corse dei cavalli che ha quintuplicato le stime (£2,098,500). Un ritratto del 1778 di Sir Joshua Reynolds che approdava sul mercato per la prima volta (£3,778,500), un paesaggio di John Constable (£14,082,500); la costa sulla Manica di Richard Parkes Bonington che da 400 mila £ è salito fino a £1,370,500; Michael Andrews (£1,142,500) e Thomas Daniell (£530,500).
