In questa vendita “Susanna e i vecchioni” di Pompeo Batoni ha superato la stima pre-asta di 6/9 milioni di dollari. 5 bidders si sono combattuti il dipinto che è stato battuto a un prezzo finale di $11,394,500 (record per l’artista in asta). 10 i bidders che hanno lottato per il panello devozionale recentemente riscoperto di Hans Memling che ha realizzato $4,114,500 (record per l’artista in asta).
George Wachter, Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Worldwide, e Christopher Apostle, Head of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings department in New York, hanno commentato: “We were delighted to see that works by major hands like Batoni, Fragonard and Memling sold incredibly well, and collectors understand that these rare works do not come to the market often. There was tremendous international bidding throughout the week, particularly from Russian collectors, who are extremely interested in French and Italian 18th century work. There was international underbidding for French Rococo master Fragonard’s The goddess Aurora triumphing over Night; however, we’re pleased to announce that the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was the eventual winner of this wonderful work.”
