23.06.2014_ Ha segnato il totale più alto degli ultimi cinque anni l’asta di Impressionist & Modern Art avvenuta da Sotheby’s a Londra nella serata del 23 giugno. Un risultato ampiamente soddisfacente per la casa d’aste che totalizzando £121,957,000, non solo ha superato il già notevole fatturato di giugno 2013 pari a £105,939,000, ma si è anche lasciata alle spalle i £112,101,350 della sessione del 2010.

46 i lotti in catalogo. 26 assegnati a cifre milionarie. Solo 3 gli invenduti. A dominare la top ten, come da previsioni, Claude Monet con le sue Nimphéas. L’opera, datata 1906, è una delle tele più astratte dell’artista, attraverso la quale si può cogliere il punto di partenza dell’arte di Rothko e di Richter. Partita da una stima compresa tra i £20 e i £30 milioni, la tela del maestro impressionista è stata aggiudicata, al termine di una lunga contesa tra più bidders al telefono, per £ 31,722,500, segnando il secondo prezzo più alto mai ottenuto dall’artista. Ottimi risultati anche dalle altre due opere in catalogo firmate Monet: La Seine à l’Argenteuil è stata assegnata a £8,538,500, mentre Antibes, vue du plateau Notre-Dame a £7,922,500, aggiudicandosi rispettivamente il terzo e quarto posto della classifica. La medaglia d’argento va invece ad una tela di significative dimensioni realizzata da Mondrian nel 1927: Composizione con rosso, blu e grigio. L’opera è stata battuta a £15,202,500, confermando la stima pre-asta di £13-18 milioni, e aggiudicandosi il titolo di seconda opera più cara di Mondrian venduta all’asta.
Grande successo anche per Pablo Picasso. Dei nove lotti che Sotheby’s proponeva ai buyers, tutti hanno trovato nuovi proprietari, e nella maggior parte dei casi a cifre superiori al milione. Il miglior risultato del maestro cubista è stato ottenuto da Portrait de Femme, un ritratto che porta la data 6 marzo 1937. L’opera, stimata £4-6 milioni, è stata aggiudicata per £5,346,500. £3,554,500 è invece il prezzo ottenuto dal dipinto L’Atelier, valutato dagli esperti della casa d’aste £2-3 milioni. Clamoroso è invece il risultato archiviato da Le Taureau, una statua in legno di cm68, realizzata dal maestro catalano tra il 1949 e il 1950. L’opera partiva da una modesta stima di £250,000-350,000 e, in seguito a continui rilanci, è passata di mano per £1,762,500.
Entrambe assegnate a cifre superiori alle stime iniziali le due opere di Alberto Giacometti. £1,594,500 è quanto ricavato da una delle sue iconiche statuine, Figurine sur grand socle. Mentre l’olio su tela Nu Debout ha trovato proprietario per £2,882,500.
Wassily Kandinsky entra nella top five con la sua unica opera proposta ai buyers nella serata: Herbstlandschaft (Autumn Landscape) ha superato la stima massima di £5 milioni ed è stato battuto per £5,570,500. Bene anche per Max Beckmann all’asta con Stilleben mit grammo phon und schwertlilien (Still-life wit gramophone and irises). La tela dal formato verticale ha quasi raddoppiato la sua stima più alta ed è stata aggiudicata per £4,786,500. £2,378,500 è invece la cifra archiviata da Suzanne au bain, la moderna Susanna di Tamara de Lempicka, proposta ai bidders con una stima di £1,6-2 milioni.
Sono invece rimasti invenduti Jeanne Pissarro (Dite Minette) assise au jardin, Pontoise di Camille Pissarro; Jeane Femme Lisant di Pierre-Auguste Renoir; e Fleurs de champs di Pierre Bonnard.

24.06.2014_ “Solo” 85,784,000 sterline contro un’attesa di £96,4-141,4 milioni per la Evening Sale londinese di Impressionist & Modern Art da Christie’s con ben 20 invenduti su 60 lotti in catalogo. Nel 2013 l’omologa vendita aveva fatto ancora meno, 64.076.575 £ mentre l’anno precedente i milioni di pound erano stati oltre 92,5.

Tra i top lot segnalati prima dell’asta, alcuni hanno disatteso le aspettative altri no. Un grande Merz di Kurt Schwitters che era stimato £4-6 milioni, è stato aggiudicato a £13.970.500 ($23.791.760), realizzando il nuovo record mondiale per l’artista tedesco. Il precedente era stato raggiunto -sempre da Christie’s a Londra- nel 2012 da “Merzbild 9A Bild mit Damestein” con 1.273.250 £ (1.998.238 $). I molti rilanci che hanno portato all’aggiudicazione milionaria di “Ja-was? – Bild (‘Yes-What?-Picture’)” confermano l’attenzione dei collezioni nei confronti di opere rare. Questa era una delle uniche tre opere di grandi dimensioni di questa prima serie rivoluzionaria di Schwitters ad essere ancora in mani private. Suo anche il lotto 33, “Das Korbbild“, che è stato conteso da diversi bidders e -da una partenza di £300.000 – è stato battuto a £674,500.
L’artiste et le modèle nu fu realizzato da Henri Matisse nel 1921, quando si trovava a Nizza. Il tema raffigurato è molto caro all’artista e i toni caldi e brillanti della composizione rimandano alle opere dipinte dall’artista nel periodo passato nel luminoso sud della Francia. Il lotto è stato battuto a un hammer price di 6.000.000, che con i diritti diventano £6,802,500, dunque al di sotto della stima più bassa di 7 milioni di sterline.
Non ha confermato le attese Alberto Giacometti, presente in catalogo con 8 lotti, di cui la metà rimasti al palo. Le Main, punta di diamante del gruppo di opere, non ha trovato un compratore. Complice forse la stima elevata di 10/15 milioni di sterline. La scultura, del 1947, fu esposta a New York in occasione della mostra alla galleria Pierre Matisse che lanciò la carriera internazionale dell’artista svizzero. Aggiudicazioni entro le stime per gli altri lotti.
Altro clamoroso unsold Piet Mondrian che con la geometrica ed essenziale “Composition A, with Double Line and Yellow” del 1935 non si riesce a qualificare tra i lotti venduti, nonostante facesse parte della rosa dei top lot del catalogo (stima £5– 8.000.000).
Invenduti anche Kandinsky, Picasso, Van Gogh, Soutine, Kokoschka.
Dopo una serie di unsold, a metà asta, si è svolta una piccola battaglia per il lotto 34, “Akt mit roten Strumpfbänder (recto); Liegender Akt (verso) ” un’opera su carta di Egon Schiele. La gouache del 1911, è stata aggiudicata a £1.930.500, non molto al di sopra della stima minima.
Tra gli impressionisti e i surrealisti in catalogo, buoni risultati.
Venduti i due paesaggi di Claude Monet: “La côte de Varengeville” (65 x 81 cm) del 1882 ha fatto £2.882.500 (stima £1.500.000 – £2.500.000) e “L’Hiver près de Lavacourt” (55 x 73.5 cm) del 1880 £1.538.500 (stima £1.400.000 – £2.000.000).
Venduti anche i due Pierre-Auguste Renoir: “Madeleine au corsage blanc et bouquet de fleurs” del 1915-1919 è stata aggiudicata a £962.500 (stima £800.000 – £1.200.000) e “Jeune femme brodant à la fenêtre” del 1900 circa ha fatto £662.500 (stima £600.000 – £900.000).
La “Mona Lisa” secondo René Magritte è stata battuta a £902.500 (stima £400.000 – £700.000) e “La belle promenade”, sempre dell’artista belga, a £2.210.500 (stima £700.000 – £1.000.000). Prezzo molto superiore alla stima per “La voix du sang” che partito da £500.000 è arrivato a £1.538.500
Diversi minuti per l’aggiudicazione del dipinto del 1925 di Joan Mirò (The Circus Horse) che è passato di mano per £2.994.500 (stima: £1.400.000 – £2.000.000). Battuto a £4.562.500, poco al di sopra della stima più bassa, “Femme à la voix de rossignol dans la nuit”.
Un collezionista ha acquistato “Rien n’est incompréhensible” di Max Ernst dopo diversi rilanci per £650.500, ma l’auctioneer era partito da £250.000. Anche “Forêt” da 350.000 è arrivato a £842,500.
