SOTHEBY’S _ 23 giugno 2014, Londra

E’ Monet la stella della Evening Sale di Sotheby’s che a Londra ieri, 23 giugno, ha messo all’asta 46 lavori impressionisti e moderni, totalizzando £121,957,000, il risultato più alto degli ultimi cinque anni nelle sessioni estive della city.

Le attesissime Nimphéas, stimate £20-30 milioni, sono state battute a £31,722,500, pari a €39,7 milioni, il secondo risultato più alto mai ottenuto dall’artista in una vendita pubblica.

L’opera, datata 1906, appartiene ad una serie che conta 250 esemplari, realizzati tra il 1889 e il 1924 nel giardino di Giverny, dove Monet ha vissuto a lungo, facendo della natura la sua principale fonte di ispirazione.

Nei primi anni del ‘900, l’artista impressionista al corrente dei nuovi sviluppi artistici in Europa, fa delle sue Ninfee opere quasi astratte, attraverso le quali oggi è possibile leggere il punto di partenza dell’arte di Marc Rothko e del contemporaneo Gerhard Richter.

Molto bene anche per Piet Mondrian. Al secondo posto nella top ten dell’asta la sua Composizione con Rosso, blu e grigioche, aggiudicata per £15,202,500, è diventata la seconda opera più cara dell’artista.
