Basquiat e Haring. Le opere dei due amici sono state protagoniste delle due serate di vendite da Christie’s e Sotheby’s a Londra. Nonostante le spettro della Brexit, i due – insieme a Andy Warhol (tra i top price dell’asta di questa sera da Pinault)- hanno confermato il successo degli artisti della favolosa scena newyorkese degli anni Ottanta
29.06.2016, Londra – 39,566,000£ per la evening sale di Christie’s di arte contemporanea e del dopoguerra (95,646,500 nel 2015). Come per Sotheby’s ieri sera, il totale si è più che dimezzato rispetto allo scorso anno. Ma oggi parte della responsabilità è da assegnare all’ “Abstraktes Bild (811-2)” di Gerhard Richter ritirato poco prima dell’inizio della vendita. La stima era a richiesta, ma si dice si aggirasse sui 14 milioni di sterline. Gli inveduti sono stati tre, su quaranta lotti offerti.
Top price per “Pork”, uno dei nove lavori di Jean-Michel Basquiat provenienti dalla collezione del celebre attore Johnny Depp. Risalgono ai primi anni Ottanta e sono distribuite in più cataloghi. “Pork” è arrivato a £5,122,500 (stima 2,5/3,5 milioni). L’altro lavoro sempre parte della collezione del Pirata dei Caraibi, è passato di mano per 3.554.500 sterline, più che raddoppiando la stima più alta.
Depp ha descritto così la relazione con il lavoro di Basquiat: «Nulla può sostituire il calore e l’immediatezza della poesia di Basquiat, o le domande e la verità che lui ci ha consegnato. La musicalità bella e inquietante dei suoi dipinti, la cacofonia del suo silenzio che attacca i nostri sensi, vivrà ben oltre il nostro respiro».
Come per il Keith Haring in asta ieri sera da Sotheby’s , venduto per 4,181,000 £, si nota come anche la provenienza illustre conti nel rendere attrattiva un’opera. Il collezionista che ha acquistato il grande The Last Rainforest ieri, nuovo record per l’artista, avrà probabilmente apprezzato anche la provenienza dalla collezione del noto fotografo David La Chapelle .
Allo stesso modo oggi la provenienza delle due opere avrà contribuito in parte a incuriosire i collezionisti, anche se ovviamente questo è già un momento d’oro per il giovane artista lanciato da Warhol e morto giovanissimo, a soli 27 anni. Tutti ricorderanno il recentissimo record d’asta di Basquiat di $57,285,000 per un autoritratto venduto da Christie’s a New York lo scorso maggio.
Secondo classificato Andy Warhol , in catalogo con un grande classico: “Two Dollar Bills”, una delle sue prime serigrafie. Fu eseguito tra marzo e aprile del 1962. Era stimato 4/6 milioni £ ed è stato venduto poco al di sopra della stima più bassa, £4,450,500.
Terzo posto nella classifica della serata per una spugna di Yves Klein . Di grandi dimensioni, Sculpture éponge bleue sans titre (SE 284) è stata battuta per 3.218.500 sterline, in linea con le stime.
Tra le altre aggiudicazioni di rilievo, si segnala l’aquila di George Baselitz venduta per 1.314.500 £ (st. 500/700 mila) e le due opere in catalogo di Adrien Ghiene , battute oltre le stime. Continua dunque il successo del giovane artista rumeno che ha visto una grande crescita di prezzi in questo 2016.
Ricordiamo anche i due nuovi record d’asta per Manolo Millares (1926-1972) con “Untitled (Composition) Painting no. 4” aggiudicato a £842,500, il doppio della stima più alta, e per Sean Scully (n. 1945) con “Eve” aggiudicata a £902,500 da una stima di £400,000 – £600,000.
Dei tre invenduti, uno era un concetto spaziale di Lucio Fontana, tre tagli su blu (st. 600/800 mila sterline). Un Acrome di Piero Manzoni è stato venduto a poco più della stima più bassa (662.500 £) mentre una mappa di Alighiero Boetti, con le 782.500 £ di aggiudicazione, non ha neanche raggiunto la previsione di realizzo inferiore.
Come ieri sera da Sotheby’s, i nostri connazionali non sono stati particolarmente apprezzati in questo strano giugno londinese delle due major . Si vedrà se con le italian sale di ottobre avranno performance migliori.
