La tela di Cy Twombly era stimata tra 35 e 55 milioni di dollari e si è fermata a 52,887,500 $. Leda e il cigno, realizzata nel 1962, non era mai mai passata in asta prima di stasera ed è stata di proprietà di solo due collezionisti. Non veniva esposta al pubblico da 25 anni e un’altra versione dello stesso soggetto si trova MoMa di New York. Nonostante questo pedigree, l’opera non è riuscita a raggiungere il record d’asta attuale dell’artista di 70,530,000$ per “Untitled (New York City)“, una lavagna del 1968, come sperato dagli esperti della maison.
Medaglia d’argento per Francis Bacon, che si è piazziato secondo per “un pugno dollari” con Three Studies for a Portrait of George Dyer, un trittico del 1963, venduto per 51,767,500$. Era stimato $ 50.000.000-70.000.000 e compariva per la prima volta sul mercato.
Infine la medaglia di bronzo è arrivata per Basquiat. La Hara”, del 1981, è stato venduto per 34,967,500 $ ed era stato consegnato alla maison dal noto collezionista e uomo d’affari Steve Cohen, che negli anni recenti, era salito alle cronache per l’acquisto di Chariot di Alberto Giacometti da Sotheby’s nel 2014 per 100.965.000 $ e dell’opera di Pablo Picasso “La Reve” acquistata per 155 milioni di dollari nel 2013 (dal magnate dei Casinò Steve Wynn).
Diversi i nuovi record d’asta realizzati: Mark Grotjahn con Untitled (S III Released to France Face 43.14) aggiudicato a $16,767,500; Robert Gober (con Untitled $4.5 milioni) David Salle (Footmen, $583,500), Man Ray (record per una fotografia, $2,167,500) e Rudolf Stingel. Classe 1956, l’artista di Merano ha molto successo sul mercato delle aste, tanto da essere uno dei pochi italiani inseriti nella 500 top artist di Artprice e che tra il 2015 e il 2016 ha visto le sue migliori aggiudicazioni in asta. Il monumentale autoritratto Untitled (After Sam) è stato battuto a USD 10,551,500, superando così i 4.757.000 $ del record precedente. Il secondo lotto dei tre offerti stasera, un Untitled dorato del 2012 aggiudicato a 6,743,500, si è classificatocome la seconda opera più cara dell’artista venduta in asta.
Scherzo del destino, l’opera di Steven Parrino “Death in America #1” che ha ispirato la sezione tematica “Death in America: Selections from the Zadig & Voltaire Collection” è rimasta invenduta. Era stimata $800,000-1,200,000. Tra gli altri artisti presenti in questa selezione di opere, provenienti della collezione assemblata da Thierry Gillier, segnaliamo il nostro Maurizio Cattelan. Quest’anno non ci ha regalato le scintille del maggio 2016 quando il suo Him era stato venduto sempre da Christie’s a NY in occasione dell’asta tematica Bound to fail per $17,189,000 (nuovo record mondiale).
Stasera era in catalogo con un “Untitled” del 2007, una scultura a grandezza naturale che rappresenta una donna in camicia da notte, legata come se fosse crocifissa e chiusa in una scatola da imballaggio, che è passata di mano per 1,507,500 dollari.
Tra le altre aggiudicazioni di rilievo si segnalano opere della Pop Art: l’ultima cena di Andy Warhol venduta per 18,727,500 ma partita da una stima di 6 milioni, la sua iconica Campbell’s Soup, aggiudicata a 27,500,000 (leggi qui un approfondimento) e la pennellata di Roy Lichtenstein battuta a 28,247,500 $.
