La metà degli acquirenti ha effettuato il suo primo acquisto in una vendita di stampe da Sotheby’s. Centinaia di offerenti hanno partecipato da 30 Paesi. Originariamente era programmata come un’asta dal vivo ma è stata convertita con successo in una vendita online.
Andy Warhol ha guidato la vendita
“Grapes” (Suite of 6) ha realizzato $ 375.000 (più del doppio della sua stima più alta $ 180.000), realizzando nuovo record mondiale per l’opera, precedentemente stabilito sempre da Sotheby’s nell’ottobre 2018 quando aveva raggiunt $ 212.500. Warhol ha realizzato “Grapes” nel 1979. L’insieme dell’uva spoglia il soggetto di qualsiasi contesto. L’altro lotto del re della Pop Art, “Moonwalk (Feldman & Schellmann II.405)”, ha fatto $ 187,500.
Tra le ultime opere che Andy Warhol ha creato prima della sua morte nel febbraio 1987, Moonwalk ha superato la sua stima più alta di $ 175.000. Moonwalk era inteso come parte di un portfolio intitolato “TV”, che avrebbe rappresentato importanti immagini della storia della televisione in America. Tuttavia, Moonwalk è stata l’unica composizione della serie che alla fine è stata stampata. Warhol ha combinato due fotografie separate di Buzz Aldrin e la bandiera americana – entrambe le immagini della NASA scattate da Neil Armstrong – per creare la serigrafia.
