Un’Italian Sale memorabile quella battuta questa sera a Londra da Sotheby’s . Con un fatturato pari a £41,387,900, dei 49 lotti in catalogo, solo uno – Documento – 1958 – V di Emilio Vedova – è rimasto al palo, scatenando un boato del pubblico in sala e una risata del banditore: tutti già fantasticavano su una White Gloves Sale .
Bianco era il filo conduttore della vendita dedicata agli italiani, un colore che pare aver portato parecchia fortuna alla casa d’aste che ha segnato il totale più alto degli ultimi cinque anni delle Italian Sale autunnali a Londra.
Nella pioggia di record, su tutti spicca il top price conquistato da un Achrome di Piero Manzoni che, dopo una lunga contesa tra i bidders, è stato aggiudicato ad un risultato stellare che è valso a segnare un nuovo record mondiale per l’artista: £12,626,500. Cifra che ha superato il doppio della stima iniziale della tela. L’opera, apparsa questa sera all’asta per la prima volta in assoluto, rappresenta l’apogeo dell’innovativa serie di Manzoni dal titolo “Achrome”, considerata uno dei contributi artistici più profondi e rivoluzionari del periodo post bellico. Con un formato che misura 110x150cm, questa è una delle sole nove tele del gruppo creata su grande scala, tre delle quali oggi sono conservate in collezioni museali.
Nell’Olimpo degli artisti premiati da questa serata storica sulle sponde del Tamigi, troviamo Enrico Castellani con la sua Superficie Bianca aggiudicata per £3,778,500. E poi Agostino Bonalumi , il cui Bianco ha trovato proprietario per 626,500; Turi Simeti che ha assegnato Bianco per £194,500; e ancora Dadamaino con Volume , aggiudicato a £ 122,500. Per un totale di cinque nuovi record d’artista.
11 i lotti che sono stati assegnati a cifre milionarie, cinque dei quali con risultati superiori ai 2 milioni di sterline. Bene anche per Lucio Fontana che con quattro opere, tre “Concetto Spaziale. Attese” – di cui due bianchi e uno rosso – e un “Concetto Spaziale” realizzato con tecnica a olio e vetro su tela, domina numericamente la top ten.
Particolarmente apprezzati anche Alighiero Boetti, Domenico Gnoli, Marino Marini, Michelangelo Pistoletto.
A seguire sulla scena londinese, la Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale è terminata archiviando un totale di £28,203,200. Un risultato superiore rispetto all’omologa asta dello scorso anno a Londra , tuttavia non comparabile al fatturato del 2012, pari a £44.146.350.
Sui 59 lotti in catalogo, 8 sono stati assegnati a cifre milionarie, mentre 7 non hanno trovato proprietario. Lo scettro del top price è andato a Pierre Soulages che ha venduto la sua Peinture, 125x202cm, 30 octobre 1958 per £2,658,500. Due medaglie d’argento a pari merito al sempreverde Jean-Michel Basquiat – un suo Untitled è passato di mano per £2,322,500 – e a Martin Kippenberger – Ohne Titel (Meine Lugen Sind Ehrlich) è stato battuto per £2,322,500. Bene anche per Andy Warhol che piazza tre sue opere nella top ten: Diamond Dust Shoes (£1,336,900); Flowers (£ 1,202,500); Mao (£962,500). Mentre Francis Bacon vende Study for a Portrait per £1,247,300.
Secondo prezzo più alto mai raggiunto da Adrian Ghenie (che aveva segnato il suo record mondiale lo scorso giugno da Sotheby’s a Londra) con Duchamp’s Funeral I , battuto per £1,022,500. Stessa sorte per Jia Aili con Green Song aggiudicata per £602,500.
Al termine della lunga ed entusiasmante serata, il sipario cala su Londra con i migliori auspici per le prossime aste newyorkesi.

16.10.2014, Londra – La Evening Sale di Arte contemporanea da Christie’s ha realizzato 40,344,500 sterline con 5 nuovi record realizzati (Joe Bradley, Rachel Whiteread, Toby Ziegler, Brent Wadden e Louis Eisner ). Subito dopo sono arrivati i 27,584,000 £ dell’Italian Sale per un totale combinato di £67,928,500 ($108,278,029/€85,570,983). Sommando anche il risultato della vendita della collezione Essl si arriva a £114,790,000 ($183,584,460 / €144,991,365). Dei 112 lotti offerti tra i due cataloghi, 13 sono rimasti invenduti. Nella Evening Sale 14 lotti sono stati aggiudicati oltre 1 milione di sterline, 3 oltre i 2 milioni e tre oltre i 4. Top price per Peter Doig con The Heart of Old San Juan battuto a £4,562,500 ($7,258,938). Secondo e terzo posto ancora over 4 milion per Gerhard Richter con “Waldstück (Chile) (Forest Piece (Chile))” a £4,450,500 ($7,080,746) e Jean Michel Basquiat con “Love Dub for A” a £4,338,500 ($6,902,554). Sono sette i lotti venduti oltre 1 milione nel catalogo dedicato ai maestri italiani. Due di questi aggiudicati oltre i due milioni. Top price per la rara “Colonna” del 1968 di Alighiero Boetti venduta a un buyer americano per £2,434,500 ($3,873,290) realizzando il nuovo record d’asta per l’artista. Oltre a Boetti, hanno superato il proprio risultato più alto anche Agostino Bonalumi ( con una scultura, lotto 135), Marina Apollonio (l. 107), Carla Accardi (l. 108 ) , Nanda Vigo (l. 166) e Piero Dorazio (l. 14). Al secondo posto sul podio Piero Manzoni con un “Achrome” del 1958-1959 aggiudicato a un italiano per £2,322,500. Medaglia di bronzo per Alberto Burri con “Combustione plastica” del 1956 venduta per £1,538,500. Il risultato di quest’anno è il migliore per una Evening Sale ad ottobre e per una Italian Sale (nel 2013 avevano rispettivamente totalizzato: 27,788,900£ e 26,798,000£)
